Hiroshima
For the worst of all reasons, Hiroshima needs no introduction..it is indeed an unusual “tourist attraction” where 1945 so many people were wiped out in one instant.
2h train ride south-west of Kyoto, we went to visit this history-charged city on our last day in Japan! The heart of the city is the spiritual Peace Memorial Park with monuments for all atomic bomb victims and a very detailed Peace Memorial Museum. Genbaku Dome is the symbol of Hiroshima, as it is the only remaining structure after the bomb hit. A visit to Hiroshima really makes one sad and thinking about the importance of eliminating nuclear weapons worldwide!
Apart from all that hard to digest history, Hiroshima is actually a very lovely city. It has its castle (reconstructed) and the nice Ota river – a perfect spot to watch Japanese having their lunch picnic below cherry trees on this beautiful, sunny springday.
