carry-on around the world in six months

Thailand ·

Eat, pray, love

…well, yes, we are still in Thailand and we are still in Ko Phangan! On the island we somehow abandoned all our original travel plans, removed the remaining travel destinations from our list (except for Namibia) and simply decided to extend our time here once more, to spend one whole month on the island! It is crazy if we think of it, as we originally planned to stay for max 2-3 days. But the reason is: we feel that all the new things we currently learn through Yoga seems to be more important and right than traveling and seeing one or two more countries. And really- it is incredible how the daily physical and mental training of Hatha Yoga postures affects your body and mind.

Our typical day on the island goes as follows:

Alarm clock 6:15am, Florian swimming for 45 min (Martina max 20min), we have little breakfast at our favourite beach spot, then Yoga class for two hours; during our free time in the afternoon we usually go and discover a new beach, have Thai lunch or simply keep it easy and read; at 4pm we have two more hours of Yoga plus music meditation and finally listen to mostly really interesting lectures about Yoga related topics, Ayurveda etc. until around 8pm..

Days pass suddenly quickly, which is a sad thing. Unlike a travel week- which always felt like an eternity- the time seems to pass so much faster now.. 😦

On our free day, Sunday, we went by ferry to Koh Phangan’s sister island called Koh Tao, famous for its diving. But honestly, after having been to Cook Islands and French Polynesia quite recently, the quality of water and underwaterworld did not impress us too much. Still the small and hilly island of Koh Tao is very nice to discover by scooter on a daytrip and has great restaurants at the beach for foodies..

Loved your yoga stories You so inspire us.
We got some sad news a month ago when we heard that the condo we’ve rented that past 3 summers for 2 months was unavailable to us as our friend was able to sell her property on Cortez Island. Hence, she will not be leaving her condo. This was devastating news for Pat – symbolized by the constant ‘deep sighing’ that took place every time she reminded herself as to what she was not going to have this summer. After one uncontrollable heart felt sigh as she once again thought of something else she would be missing, I lovingly asked…WHAT THIS TIME!! And she replied …”I’m so going to miss Annica’s bath tub. As for me, I’m ecstatic, while visiting Annica last summer at her Cortez Island home, I got the vision to spend the summer island hopping, camping, exploring and kayaking our way through as many islands as our spirits allowed. I was pumped!

However, the sighing continued and slowly wore me down. I finally was sharing Pat’s plight with our new found energy moving chiropractor who we have come to love dearly. I asked if she could move some stuff around to quiet Pat down. Her response was giving a call to a good friend who had a condo in Comox. Perhaps he’d rent it to us?! A short process and negotiation later…Pat was presented the keys as a surprise on mothers day. We’ll now be residents of a Penthouse condo on Comox Ave.

We have 2 kayak trips in the works. 3-4 days paddling around Tofino with Dr. Paula.

Followed by 5 days back to the Broken Islands. A long time friend Gareth Wood out of Victoria has purchased a 51 foot sail boat, with plans to do some sailing with Gareth. Vancouver Island is such a playground.

Our darling daughter is doing amazingly well, finishing off her Holistic Nutrition course in July ( one year program), then the process of setting up a practice to work her craft. We are soooooo proud of her.

Our time home has been incredibly busy. We’ve had to factor my aging parents, now 92 and 86, and the need to start to explore their move to assisted living. Of course they have no interest of leaving their home of 60 years, ( my dad just got his driving license renewed for 2 more years…he’ll b e 94 when the next renewal comes up.

Pat’s boss got fired and she has had to take on extra responsibilities in areas she has no interest. This is taking the fun out of working for sure.

I’ve been fortunate to have some of my work take place in the mountains …see attached photo, which adds value to the pleasure of my work.

Pat and I have committed to returning to New Zealand…next year 2014. We so enjoyed every aspect of this years trip including our time in the Cook Islands, that we’ll be replicating the whole package again next year. 6 weeks wandering New Zealand followed by 2 weeks in the Cook Islands.

A wee bit of an update on the life of 2 Canadians.

Our thoughts are with you, Much like the Astronauts that just landed, you’ll be planning your return voyage home before long too. How is that going, or is yoga keeping you in the happy place.
Hoping you’re both well and spirited.
