As our last destination we went down south and into the enormous Namib Desert which sweeps across most of Central Namibia.

For the two final nights on our trip we treated ourselves with the amazing Dune Lodge right inside the National Park at Sossusvlei. We stayed in a huge elevated and beautifully constructed bungalow, all made of natural material. Perfect setting!

Alarm clock set for 4:00 am, we got up super early to see the sunrise at Sossusvlei’s highest dune (300m), affectionately called “Big Daddy” by the locals. We hiked along the rim of this mega dune until we reached the top. Uah, what a view!! Colours of the surrounding red dunes seem to shift as the light changes. And there is this perfect silence. Beautiful.

Back on the foot of the dune, there was another spectacular landmark, the flat, reflective white floor of a dried up salt lake with dark, dead camel-thorn trees everywhere..

Then, in the evening, we literally flew into the last sunset of our trip..we went on a scenic flight, to see the desert world for one hour from above. Only up there, we understood the incredible dimensions of dunes and desert. Watching the play of light and shadow of the dunes from above was just spectacular and nothing could have concluded our long journey better than this experience on the flight of the small cessna plane. A perfect last day of a wonderful trip!
